Hello, my name is Katie Haig-Anderson and I’m running for Vice President Advocate in the University of Winnipeg Student Association elections. I am a recent International Development Studies graduate, and have been the coordinator of the UWSA Womyn’s Centre for the last two years. I have also learned about social justice and political organizing through volunteering with Katimavik and FemRev.

I think that two of the great strengths of the UWSA are that it is socially and environmentally engaged. For example, the UWSA lead the bottled water ban on our campus; an environmentally-responsible initiative that I am proud of. I am committed to maintaining and further developing these strengths.
I will also work to expand UWSA visibility, and to create open dialogue between students and their union.

Another priority of mine is to continue the UWSA’s work making university affordable and accessible. Additionally, I think the UWSA has an important role in enriching student life, and I would strive to create lots of opportunities for fun and learning outside the classroom. The UWSA had a lot of fantastic events last year, such as O week, The Target Poverty march and campaign, SnO week, and Snoballs of Fury. I will build on last year's successful events, and continue to make the university an exciting place, and a place where students do more than attend class.

As VPA, my job would be to represent and advocate for you. One of the primary duties of the VPA is to advocate for students who are doing academic appeals, who have been charged with misconduct, who have experienced sexual harassment, or who have other advocacy needs. I will support students in need of advocacy and also spread the word about the advocacy services that are available.

Other duties of the VPA are to liase with external organizations, including community groups and government, to support the food bank and World University Service of Canada (WUSC), and to sit on university and UWSA committees as a representative of students. I would be honoured to take on these jobs.

Next week, I encourage you to make your voice heard by voting in the UWSA elections. All students are union members, and the union exists to serve you and make your university experience a positive one. I would love to be the Vice President Advocate in the UWSA, as I have the skills and the vision to make valuable contributions to the union, and because I care deeply about this university and its students.

I welcome your questions and feedback, so message me, email me at katieforvpa@gmail.com, and learn more about me and my campaign at www.katieforvpa.blogspot.com.

My speech, and all UWSA executive candidates' speeches, will be in the Riddell Cafeteria on Friday, March 12th at 12:30. Voting will take place from Monday, March 15th to Thursday, March 18th.
